Trim Trees using a pole saw 

Description

This course provides participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely trim and prune trees using a pole saw. Participants will learn to assess work areas, identify hazards, and select appropriate equipment to carry out pruning tasks from the ground. Training includes correct pole saw operation, safe cutting techniques, branch removal methods, and the application of arboriculture principles to support tree health and structure.

The course also covers the use of personal protective equipment, safe work practices, and environmental considerations when working around vegetation. On completion, participants will be able to perform pole saw trimming tasks safely and effectively in arboriculture and vegetation management environments.

Target learner group

This course is designed for workers who operate mobile chippers and mulchers in workplace environments. It is aimed at individuals who need practical skills to safely prepare, operate, and maintain chipping and mulching equipment while following workplace procedures and environmental protection requirements.

Typical learners include employees in landscaping, parks and gardens, vegetation management, local government maintenance, and land management roles who handle tree and vegetation debris. Learners are expected to have basic workplace health and safety awareness, the physical capability to handle outdoor equipment, and sufficient language, literacy, and numeracy skills to follow instructions, complete records, and operate machinery safely.

Learning outcomes

Learners who complete this unit will be able to:

  • Understand workplace procedures and safety requirements for tree trimming tasks.
  • Prepare for tree trimming, including selecting and using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Identify and assess hazards and risks associated with using a pole saw.
  • Assess tree type, condition, and stability to determine safe trimming practices.
  • Plan and carry out tree trimming activities safely and efficiently.
  • Operate a pole saw correctly according to manufacturer instructions and workplace procedures.
  • Perform basic maintenance on pole saws and related equipment, including cleaning, inspection, and minor adjustments.
  • Clear and dispose of trimmed branches in accordance with workplace and environmental procedures.
  • Work effectively with team members to coordinate tasks and maintain a safe work environment.

Assessment approach

Learners will be assessed using a combination of the following methods:

  • Theory/Written Assessment
  • Direct Observation/Practical Assessment

Accreditation Status

Nationally recognised training.
Upon successful completion, learners will receive a statement of attainment.
