Target learner group
This course is designed for workers who operate mobile chippers and mulchers in workplace environments. It is aimed at individuals who need practical skills to safely prepare, operate, and maintain chipping and mulching equipment while following workplace procedures and environmental protection requirements.
Typical learners include employees in landscaping, parks and gardens, vegetation management, local government maintenance, and land management roles who handle tree and vegetation debris. Learners are expected to have basic workplace health and safety awareness, the physical capability to handle outdoor equipment, and sufficient language, literacy, and numeracy skills to follow instructions, complete records, and operate machinery safely.
Learning outcomes
Learners who complete this unit will be able to:
- Understand workplace procedures and safety requirements for tree trimming tasks.
- Prepare for tree trimming, including selecting and using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Identify and assess hazards and risks associated with using a pole saw.
- Assess tree type, condition, and stability to determine safe trimming practices.
- Plan and carry out tree trimming activities safely and efficiently.
- Operate a pole saw correctly according to manufacturer instructions and workplace procedures.
- Perform basic maintenance on pole saws and related equipment, including cleaning, inspection, and minor adjustments.
- Clear and dispose of trimmed branches in accordance with workplace and environmental procedures.
- Work effectively with team members to coordinate tasks and maintain a safe work environment.
