Hazardous Area Classification, Design & Audit (HACD) Services
Across every Australian jurisdiction, WHS and Electrical laws require explosive atmospheres to be identified and controlled.
AS/NZ IEC 60079.10.1 are the nationally recognised methods used by regulators to determine hazardous zones and justify equipment selection.

Hazardous Area Classification (HAC)
Define hazardous zones and extents for gases/vapours and/or dusts, producing clear drawings and a defensible report so equipment and installation requirements are unambiguous.”

Hazardous Area Design (HAD)
Translate the classification into compliant electrical design, equipment selection, protection techniques, installation requirements, and documentation to support safe construction, commissioning, and ongoing compliance.

Hazardous Area Audits
In Queensland, hazardous-area electrical installations generally require inspection by an accredited auditor prior to first energisation or reconnection after electrical work (s221). We provide audit planning, inspection, reporting, and close-out support.
When do you need HACD?
- New Plant/ expansions
- Major modifications in a classified area
- Change in substance, ventilation or operating conditions
- Incident / near miss / compliance reset
- Commissioning or energisation deadline approaching (QLD)
- Site audit finding / missing documentation / unclear zones

FAQ
What is HACD?
HACD is the end-to-end service covering Hazardous Area Classification (HAC), Hazardous Area Design (HAD), and Hazardous Area Audits (QLD), so your hazardous area electrical installation is correctly zoned, designed, documented, and ready for energisation.
What’s the difference between HAC and HAD?
HAC defines the hazardous zones (e.g., Zone 0/1/2 or 20/21/22) and their extents.
HAD applies those zones to the electrical installation equipment selection, installation requirements, documentation and verification readiness.
What standards do you work to?
Our deliverables are aligned to the AS/NZS IEC 60079 series (classification and electrical installation requirements), and we structure documentation so it’s practical for construction, commissioning, and ongoing site compliance.
What deliverables will we receive?
Typical deliverables may include: hazardous area zone drawings, classification report, equipment selection schedule (EPL/protection technique), installation requirements, documentation suitable for handover, and (in QLD) audit evidence and reporting outputs.
Do you do brownfield sites where documentation is missing or unclear?
Yes. We commonly support brownfield assets. Where information is incomplete, we start with a focused site walkdown + data capture, then build the minimum documentation set needed to progress safely and compliantly.
What information do you need from us to start?
If available: layout drawings, process/substance details (SDS), ventilation information, equipment list, and any existing hazardous area documentation. If you don’t have everything, we can still begin with a walkdown and a gap assessment.
How long does HAC / HAD typically take?
Timeframes depend on site complexity and the quality of available inputs. We’ll confirm scope, inputs, and a practical schedule during the initial scoping call.
Do you provide Hazardous Area Audits in Queensland?
Yes. In Queensland, section 221 of the Electrical Safety Regulation 2013 requires an accredited auditor to inspect hazardous area electrical installations prior to first connection, and for reconnection after electrical work (to the extent affected), with certain exemptions (e.g., specific “like-for-like” replacements).
When is a QLD audit required — first energisation or re-energisation?
Both can apply. Section 221 covers first connection at a place, and connection/reconnection after electrical installation work.
Can you help us get “audit ready” before the auditor arrives?
Yes. We can perform an audit readiness review checking documentation, equipment selection, installation details, and evidence so issues are found early (before commissioning pressure).
Do you only do audits, or can you also fix issues found during an audit?
We can support the whole close-out process helping you interpret findings, prioritise fixes, update documentation, and prepare for re-inspection if required.
Can this integrate with RelyOn training?
Yes. We can align HACD consulting outcomes with training needs so your team understands the zones, equipment requirements, and “what good looks like” for installation and maintenance.
Why RelyOn?
• Led by industry-recognised HACD engineers
• Independent, defensible engineering advice
• Deep experience across renewables, BESS, hydrogen & industrial assets
• Integrated with broader electrical safety & compliance services
