Operation of a Chipper/Mulcher

Description

This course equips participants with the skills and knowledge required to safely operate wood chippers and mulching equipment used in arboriculture and vegetation management activities. Participants will learn how to inspect and prepare equipment for operation, feed material safely, manage worksite hazards, and carry out shutdown and routine maintenance procedures.

Training emphasises safe work practices, hazard identification, and the correct use of personal protective equipment to minimise risks when working around moving machinery. Participants will also learn techniques for handling vegetation debris efficiently. On completion, participants will be able to operate a chipper or mulcher safely and effectively while complying with workplace procedures and safety requirements.

Target learner group

This course is designed for workers who operate mobile chippers and mulchers in workplace environments. It is aimed at individuals who need practical skills to safely prepare, operate, and maintain chipping and mulching equipment while following workplace procedures and environmental protection requirements.

Typical learners include employees in landscaping, parks and gardens, vegetation management, local government maintenance, and land management roles who handle tree and vegetation debris. Learners are expected to have basic workplace health and safety awareness, the physical capability to handle outdoor equipment, and sufficient language, literacy, and numeracy skills to follow instructions, complete records, and operate machinery safely.

Learning outcomes

Learners who complete this unit will be able to:

  • Understand and follow workplace procedures, safety requirements, and environmental protection practices for chipping and mulching tasks.
  • Prepare for chipping/mulching work, including planning activities, selecting PPE, and checking equipment for safe operation.
  • Identify and assess hazards and risks associated with operating mobile chippers and mulchers, and take appropriate mitigation actions.
  • Identify suitable and unsuitable materials for chipping or mulching and manage them according to workplace and environmental procedures.
  • Set up, position, and operate chipping and mulching equipment safely and efficiently according to manufacturer instructions and workplace procedures.
  • Control material feed and manage output, ensuring equipment operates within safe capacity limits.
  • Respond effectively to emergency situations, including equipment shutdown, to prevent injury or damage.
  • Perform basic operator maintenance, including cleaning, inspection, checking cutters, refueling, and reporting equipment faults.
  • Record and report production outcomes and maintenance activities in line with workplace procedures.

Assessment approach

Learners will be assessed using a combination of the following methods:

  • Theory/Written Assessment
  • Direct Observation/Practical Assessment

Accreditation Status

Nationally recognised training.
Upon successful completion, learners will receive a statement of attainment.
