Maintain Chainsaws (Cert III in Arboriculture unit)

Description

This course develops the skills and knowledge required to maintain chainsaws used in arboriculture and forestry operations. Participants will learn to inspect, service, and carry out routine maintenance on chainsaws to ensure safe and efficient operation. Training covers identifying chainsaw faults, sharpening and replacing chains, maintaining guide bars and sprockets, and performing regular maintenance in accordance with manufacturer specifications.

The course also emphasises workplace safety, hazard management, and correct use of personal protective equipment. On completion, participants will be able to confidently maintain chainsaws to operational standards, helping to extend equipment life, improve performance, and support safe arboriculture and vegetation management practices.

Target learner group

This course is aimed at entry-level or novice individuals who need the skills and knowledge to safely operate and maintain a hand-held chainsaw. It is suitable for workers, trainees, apprentices, or students in forestry, agriculture, landscaping, parks and gardens, conservation, or local government outdoor services.

No prior chainsaw experience or licensing is required.

Learning outcomes

Learners who complete this unit will be able to:

  • Prepare for chainsaw maintenance by identifying maintenance requirements, confirming safety and environmental procedures, assessing risks, planning activities, coordinating with team members, and selecting the correct tools and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Perform chainsaw maintenance safely and effectively, including routine and periodic servicing, checking and replacing chains and components, diagnosing faults, and ensuring operational readiness according to manufacturer and workplace requirements.
  • Complete post-maintenance tasks, such as cleaning the work area, inspecting and storing tools, managing waste responsibly, and maintaining accurate maintenance records. These outcomes ensure learners can maintain chainsaws in a safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible manner while complying with workplace procedures.

Assessment approach

Learners will be assessed using a combination of the following methods:

  • Theory/Written Assessment
  • Direct Observation/Practical Assessment

Accreditation Status

Nationally recognised training.
Upon successful completion, learners will receive a statement of attainment.
