Fall trees manually (Intermediate)

Description

The aim of this course is to develop learners’ skills and knowledge to safely and effectively fell intermediate‑level trees using manual techniques. The unit builds on foundational felling skills and focuses on assessing more complex tree characteristics, planning safe felling operations, and applying advanced cutting methods to control tree direction and manage increased risk.

Learners will strengthen their ability to identify hazards, respond to unexpected situations, and work in accordance with workplace procedures, environmental requirements, and WHS/OHS legislation. The course prepares participants to operate confidently and competently in forestry, land management, and vegetation control environments where intermediate‑level tree felling is required.

Target learner group

This unit is suited to workers who already have basic tree‑felling skills and are progressing to more complex manual felling tasks. It is designed for people in forestry, agriculture, land management, conservation, utilities, and vegetation‑control roles who need to safely manage intermediate‑level trees.

Learners typically have foundational chainsaw and felling experience, can work safely in outdoor environments, and are ready to handle increased risk and responsibility.

Learning outcomes

Learners completing this unit will be able to assess intermediate‑level trees and site conditions, plan and prepare for more complex felling operations, and apply advanced manual felling techniques to safely control tree direction. They will be able to manage higher‑risk hazards, respond appropriately to unexpected situations, and work in compliance with workplace procedures, WHS/OHS requirements, and environmental guidelines.

  • Chainsaw pants/chaps
  • Gloves
  • Boots
  • Hi-vis

Assessment approach

Learners will be assessed using a combination of the following methods:

  • Theory/Written Assessment
  • Direct Observation/Practical Assessment

Accreditation Status

Nationally recognised training.
Upon successful completion, learners will receive a statement of attainment.
