Environmental Skills Program

Description

This program provides participants with the practical knowledge and skills required to support environmental management and conservation activities across natural and managed landscapes. Participants will develop capabilities in recognising environmental values, assisting with conservation and restoration activities, and supporting land, water and habitat protection initiatives.

Training focuses on safe work practices, environmental awareness, and the implementation of environmentally responsible work methods in outdoor environments. Participants will learn how to assist with field-based environmental tasks, contribute to the protection of ecosystems, and support sustainable land management practices.

On completion, participants will be better equipped to participate in environmental projects and conservation-focused land management activities.

Units of Competency

AHCARB325Manage trees to create and maintain habitat refugesCurrent
AHCLPW312Carry out inspection of designated areaCurrent
AHCFAU202Recognise faunaCurrent
AHCECR202Maintain wildlife habitat refugesCurrent

Target learner group

The learners are entry to mid-level professionals working in arboriculture, forestry, environmental management, or conservation roles. They include arborists, tree care workers, environmental field staff, rangers, and biodiversity officers involved in tree and habitat management, ecological inspections, or wildlife monitoring. They require practical skills in tree pruning, habitat management, fauna and vegetation assessment, and safe use of equipment such as ropes, harnesses, and tools.

Learners must also follow workplace safety procedures, conduct site-specific risk assessments, collect and analyse environmental data, and operate responsibly in outdoor settings while managing ecological and workplace hazards.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Plan, prepare, and conduct safe work in natural environments, including site setup, PPE use, risk assessments, and job safety analyses (JSA)
  • Inspect, prepare, and maintain tools, equipment, and vehicles for safe and effective operations
  • Identify, access, and manage trees, vegetation, and fauna habitats, retaining features such as hollows, stubs, and other structures for wildlife
  • Apply vegetation management and pruning techniques (e.g., natural fracture pruning, coronet cutting) to create or enhance fauna habitats
  • Install, monitor, and maintain wildlife habitat structures, including ground refuges, nesting boxes, and tree hollows, while controlling invasive pests
  • Conduct fauna recognition and identification, recording observations, maintaining field notes, and complying with animal welfare and regulatory standards
  • Plan and carry out ecological inspections, recording environmental targets, analysing impacts, and communicating with stakeholders
  • Manage environmental and safety risks during fieldwork, including biosecurity, waste disposal, and hazard mitigation
  • Document and report findings accurately, submit samples and records in compliance with legislation and workplace procedures
  • Restore sites after operations, ensuring minimal environmental impact and proper cleaning, storage, and maintenance of equipment
