Chemical Handling

Description

This course provides participants with the knowledge and skills required to safely transport, store, handle, and apply agricultural and vegetation management chemicals in accordance with regulatory and workplace requirements. Participants will learn how to read and interpret chemical labels and safety data sheets, prepare and apply chemicals safely, and manage risks associated with chemical use.

The training also covers the use and calibration of application equipment, correct use of personal protective equipment, and environmental protection practices. On completion, participants will be able to handle and apply chemicals responsibly, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation while protecting people, property, and the environment.

Target learner group

This course is ideal for employees working with chemicals and pest or weed management, including chemical handlers, laboratory and warehouse staff, transport drivers, agricultural and horticultural workers, pest control operators, and land or environmental managers. Learners will gain practical skills to handle, store, and apply chemicals safely, use PPE, operate equipment, and implement effective weed and pest control while complying with workplace and environmental regulations.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Handle and transport chemicals safely – Identify hazards, assess risks, secure containers, and use personal protective equipment (PPE) while following workplace and regulatory procedures.
  • Plan and apply chemicals effectively – Assess the need for chemical use, prepare safe chemical mixes, calibrate and operate equipment, and monitor application to ensure effectiveness while minimizing risks to people, non-target species, and the environment.
  • Store and manage chemicals – Maintain storage areas, monitor expiry dates, safely dispose of chemicals, and keep accurate records of all chemical handling and applications.
  • Assess and control weeds – Identify infestations, plan and implement control measures, adjust actions based on site conditions, and monitor outcomes to ensure effectiveness and minimize environmental impact.
  • Maintain accurate records and safety compliance – Document chemical applications, incidents, and weed control activities in line with workplace, legislative, and environmental requirements.
