Steam Turbine and Standard & Advanced Boiler Operation

This course is designed to train individuals who are required to hold a current certificate for the specified work.
This course has been tailored based on industry best-practice and to be in accordance with the relevant standards and legislations.
The course will be delivered by an experienced industry professional, bringing a depth of knowledge and experience to the participant.

This course is designed to ensure that participants have the skills and knowledge required to operate an advanced boiler, including a standard boiler. Operation includes boiler start up, handover, monitoring, shut down and storage. Also covered are preparation for inspection procedures as specified in manufacturer recommendations, identification of maintenance requirements and relevant risk control measures.

The boilers covered by this course are standard boilers, including boilers defined in AS 2593:2004 Safety management and supervision systems and AS 3873:2001 Pressure equipment, Operation and maintenance and typically have fixed and modulating combustion controls, fixed and modulated air supply, and heat source.

Combined with this course, is the skills and knowledge required to operate a steam turbine for licensing purposes, and covers the operation of any steam turbine (except a steam turbine that produces a power output of less than 500 kW).
This course requires the operator to plan the work, carry out pre-operational safety checks, start the steam turbine, monitor steam turbine operation, and shut-down the steam turbine.

This course is based upon the National Standard for Licensing Persons Performing High Risk Work.

Who should attend

This unit of competency supports persons who are required to operate a standard boiler, an advanced boiler and a steam turbine.

Course aim

The course aims to give the learners an overall understanding of the operation of a standard and an advanced boiler unit and the relationships between the various systems within the unit cycle.

This course also aims to provide learners with the knowledge and skills required to operate a steam turbine. The course will describe pre-operational safety checks, and how to start, monitor and shut down the steam turbine.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, a learner will have developed an understanding of the following:

  • Plan the work, carry out pre-operational safety checks, and start of a standard boiler, an advanced boiler and a steam turbine;
  • Accurate recording and maintenance of information relating to operation of a standard boiler, an advanced boiler and a steam turbine;
  • Compliance with legislation, regulations, standards, codes of practice and established safe practices and procedures for starting, operating, shutting down and maintaining a standard boiler, an advanced boiler and a steam turbine;
  • Diagnostic and testing techniques as applied to a standard boiler, an advanced boiler and steam turbines;
  • Monitor a standard boiler, an advanced boiler and steam turbine operation;
  • Shut down the a standard boiler, an advanced boiler and steam turbine;
  • Efficient and safe conduct when starting, operating, shutting down and maintaining a standard boiler, an advanced boiler and a steam turbine;
  • Use of appropriate communication techniques with colleagues and others;
  • Use of relevant tools and equipment;
  • Verification of problems and steam turbine equipment faults and demonstrate appropriate response procedures;
  • Basic principles of heat transfer and thermodynamics;
  • Confined space awareness and the limits for entry into a confined space;
  • Environmental protection requirements relating to the disposal of waste material and storage of environmentally hazardous materials;
  • Established communication channels and protocols in the workplace;
  • Safety data sheets and material handling methods;
  • Organisational and workplace standards, requirements, policies and procedures;
  • Procedures for the recording, reporting and maintenance of workplace records and information;
  • Understanding of the hierarchy of hazard identification and control;
  • Typical routine problems encountered in the process and with equipment and adjustments required for correction.

  • Stationary (e.g. Pen, Pencil, etc.)

Course materials

The following will be provided to learners to complete the course:

  • Course notes: Slide handouts
  • Assessment workbook
  • Steam textbook

Licensing and regulatory information

The application of the skills and knowledge described in this unit may require a licence/registration to practice in the workplace subject to regulations for undertaking of electrical work.
Other conditions may apply under state and territory legislative and regulatory licencing requirements which must be confirmed prior to commencing this unit.
Specific licensing/regulatory requirements relating to this competency, including requirements for refresher training should be obtained from the relevant national/state/territory Work Health and Safety Regulatory Authorities.

Additional information

This unit meets the requirements of the state and territory Work Health and Safety (WHS) Regulations, including licensing. Any alteration will result in a unit which is not acceptable to regulators for the purpose of licensing.
This course is based upon the National Standard for Licensing Persons Performing High Risk Work.

A licence to perform high risk work (HRW) is part of a national system which authorises individuals to carry out particular classes of work such as scaffolding, dogging, tower crane operation and forklift operation. These 29 HRW licence classes have been incorporated into Queensland law by the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011 (WHS Regulation).
To obtain a HRW licence under the WHS Regulation, a person must be trained in accordance with the applicable unit of competency by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and then be assessed as competent against the applicable national assessment instrument (NAI) by an assessor who is accredited by the work health and safety regulator (the regulator) under the WHS Regulation.
When conducting assessments or undertaking assessment administrative requirements you must comply with the requirements of the applicable unit of competency and the applicable NAI issued from time to time by Safe Work Australia.

The regulator issues accredited assessors with an accreditation document. You must keep the accreditation document available for inspection under the WHS Act and make it available for inspection by any person in relation to whom the assessor is conducting, or is to conduct, an assessment. . Upon successful completion of the above process, the Trainee will receive the relevant Statement of Attainment and the application forms required to apply for the HRL License.
