When you need this
An older study.
Changed equipment.
New sources on site.
Select anything that applies to your site. Your selections can be included in the scoping request.
Outcomes & business value
Use the results to guide practical decisions.
A documented study basis
A structured incident-energy report with the assessed scenarios, source information and assumptions available for technical review.
PPE guidance for the equipment
Calculated incident energy and boundaries inform arc-rated PPE requirements alongside the task and the site’s electrical safety arrangements.
A remediation shortlist
Identify where protection changes or engineering controls could reduce incident energy, with priorities for further assessment and implementation.
Scope & typical deliverables
From network data to clear switchboard information.
Incident-energy calculations for agreed HV, complex and LV circuits, including AC and DC systems, BESS and solar plant.
Confirm the equipment and data
Agree the site boundaries, operating scenarios and equipment to be assessed. Identify the drawings, protection settings and transformer and cable data needed.
Develop and review the network model
Build the network in power-systems software and check it against available site records. Record assumptions and information that needs verification.
Calculate incident energy and boundaries
Assess the agreed equipment and operating conditions using methods appropriate to the system, and document the results and study basis.
Prepare labels and recommendations
Provide switchboard labels or agreed artwork, report the boundaries and develop PPE guidance and prioritised risk-reduction recommendations.
Scope the follow-on work
Discuss protection changes, engineering controls and workforce training required to put the recommendations into practice.
What you receive
Results your site team can use.
- Incident-energy study report
- Assessed scenarios, assumptions and equipment results
- Arc flash boundaries
- Switchboard labels or agreed label artwork
- Arc-rated PPE recommendations
- Prioritised risk-reduction recommendations
Agreed at scoping: data collection visits, model delivery, detailed remediation design and training are defined around your project requirements.
Our approach
Know what information to gather
We identify the required single-line diagrams, protection settings, transformer and cable data. We confirm what is available during scoping.
Build the site model
Your network is built in power-systems software and reviewed against site records, so the study reflects the agreed operating configurations.
Assess the agreed circuits
Calculate incident energy and arc flash boundaries for the scoped equipment and scenarios, including AC and DC where required.
Make the results visible
Prepare arc flash labels as printed copies or artwork, as agreed, with supporting results and PPE guidance for the equipment.
Plan the next actions
Discuss the prioritised recommendations, including protection settings and engineering controls. Arc flash awareness training can be scoped for the teams who work with the equipment.

Transgrid Substations
Arc flash risk assessment
Connecting incident-energy results with risk controls.
RelyOn assessed arc flash hazards at Transgrid’s LV distribution boards and developed recommendations for engineering and procedural controls. The work included prioritising equipment, assessing risk-reduction options and supporting their adoption through site procedures and workforce training.

FAQ's
Before you scope the study.
Do you cover DC systems and BESS?
A prioritised remediation plan (settings changes first, capital works last) plus arc flash awareness training for the crews who work the boards.
What data do you need from us?
Single-line diagrams, protection settings, and transformer/cable schedules as a minimum. If records are patchy, we scope a data-gathering site visit — the readiness check below tells you where you stand.
How long does a study take?
A single site is typically 3–6 weeks from complete data; multi-site programs are staged so the highest-risk boards are labelled first.
Do labels and PPE recommendations come with the study?
Yes — every study includes switchboard labels, approach boundaries and PPE category recommendations. Remediation and training are optional follow-ons.
